One year ago

February 4, 2024 was a day to remember. I was hanging out on Castro Street with my friend, Tandy and my husband James. I remember a gust of wind, and then the next thing I knew, I was on the sidewalk and could not move. I wasn’t dead! I wasn’t paralyzed! I didn’t hit my head, I don’t think. But man oh man, I was really hurt. As I learned later, I had at least 13 fractures. Spread out between my foot, pelvis and thoracic spine. The pain was so intense. When the ambulance picked me up they gave me Fentanyl which didn’t seem to do anything. I then spent 3 days in the ICU, and another 5 weeks at a skilled nursing facility in San Bruno. The first time I tried to stand up after the accident - about 10 days into my skilled nursing stay, I nearly fainted. It has not been an easy year. I have worked hard getting back in shape, and though the pain is still quite intense sometimes, I am able to proceed with the things I love: Pottery, hanging out with my friends, taking long walks ( with lots of stops). I hope that the upcoming year will afford more mobility and less pain. I am hopeful that it will definitely lead to more pots!!
